Since it's release in 1975, Horses has been viewed by critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time. Horses has been cited as a key influence on a number of succeeding post-punk, and alternative rock acts, including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Hole, The Smiths, R.E.M. and PJ Harvey.

The music on Horses was informed by the minimalist, garage rock-inspired aesthetic of the then-nascent American punk rock movement. Smith and her band developed the album's songs around simple chord structures. The musicians' frequent improvisation, however, differentiated them from other contemporary punk acts. Smith's lyrics on Horses encompassed ruminations on her family, tributes to deceased rock icons, and imagined narratives.
